  1. Recommended Professor

So why are you spamming threads with this information? Why help her? Do you know her? Are you really her? What is the deal? Do you think people are really going to care after seeing this every where?
  2. Recommended Professor

What is the point of this post? Why are you recommending her? Who are you recommending her to? (Just some random people on Quant net)
  3. Ph.D in Pure Math or Masters in Quantitative Finance?

Depends on what you want to do. Cryptology then Florida Atlantic University Mining type fields Colorado School of Mines There are schools for Applied Math geared towards Biology, Cosmology, Fluid Mechanics, etc. You should find what you like and look for those schools that do that.
  4. Ph.D in Pure Math or Masters in Quantitative Finance?

Applied Math should be the other choice not Pure.
  5. Going back to Undergraduate Math?

I understand that. Read post 5 and 14 so you have the full idea of why that was said.
  6. Going back to Undergraduate Math?

I know students who passed the AP BC and failed the Calc 1 tests.
  7. Going back to Undergraduate Math?

I am a TA for Calc 1. College based Calc isn't the same as HS based Calc. I see students who scored high enough to go into Calc 2 or 3 fail tests in Calc 1. I know that at Cornell Calc 3 or maybe it was 2 is integrated with DE so it is at a very fast pace. With that being said, I really think it...
  8. Undergraduate Project

The Heat Equation is the under pinning of Black Scholes
  9. strengthening my background and other questions...?

Take Calc 1-3, DE, Linear Alg, Calc based Probability, PDE, Stochastic Calculus
  10. Undergraduate Project

Eigenfunction expansion of the Heat Equation.
  11. Quant finance straight from undergrad?

What do you consider financial math? I have a BS in Finance and Math. However, I wouldn't say any math I learned in finance would go anywhere. A PhD in Finance requires, in general, that the student have taken Cal 1-3, Linear Alg, and maybe another course or two. A degree in quant finance...
  12. Quant finance straight from undergrad?

I don't think Finance or Financial Econ will prepare you for Quant work. I don't see those 2 helping you.
  13. Quant finance straight from undergrad?

Then get a PhD in Applied Math, Computer Science, Physics, EE, etc. Then you will have the skills to enter Quant Finance, you will general receive a free education, and if you think it is crap, you will be able to do something else.
  14. Need help! Economics student apply for mfe

If this individual obtains a scaled score of 700 or higher, they should just apply for a PhD in Math. Here is the practice book: http://www.ets.org/Media/Tests/GRE/pdf/gre_0809_math_practice_book.pdf The actually test isn't this easy (you may not call this easy though).
  15. Question about courses

If you sign up before you apply to school, it will appear on transcript as in progress or whatever notation your school uses.
  16. Affordable Online Math Courses

PDE and Numerical Methods (Analysis) would probably be extremely hard in an online format. I took PDE as an independent study and that was hard, but I had an adviser to turn to for help.
  17. Help with Course Selection

Programming, discrete math/prob stats, calc/ linear alg
  18. MFE after Phd?

You are supposed to be an expert in your niche research area. A bet there a banks looking for experts in your area. Like you said a MFE won't be able to compete with you there. Take a programming class every semester while you are working until you have the hang of it.
  19. Academic Research

I don't get it? Many students if not all just say Calc 1, 2, and 3 for short.
  20. MFE after Phd?

To get your PhD, you have to contribute something to the academic community via new research. What you write has to be peer reviewed and published. I don't think a bank can categorize you with MFE students. If anything, you should have a better understanding than the MFE students.
  21. MFE after Phd?

I am confused. Could you explain the difference of your PhD in Financial Math compared to a MFE? To me, I don't see a difference besides one is more researched based.
  22. Real analysis?

Upper level stats use a lot of Measure Theory (aka Real Analysis topics).
  23. What books are you currently reading?

I prefer Halmos better. Halmos in Ch1 covers a normal course in Lin Alg minus eigenvalues and transformations. The sections are short and concise and he doesn't waste any time with a chapter on basic Set Theory.
  24. Hurricane Irene

To be honest, I am glad the rain is headed up north. I live in Boca Raton, FL so having a reprieval from this great. :)
  25. Calling all Business Undergrads

I am not sure you will find a lot since accounting isn't going to prepare one for a MFE program. However, accounting majors who have a degree in Math, Physics, Computer Science, and Engineering as well would be better candidates for a MFE.
  26. What books are you currently reading?

I need to add to my list: Topology 2nd Edition by James Munkers Finite-Dimensional Vector Spaces by Paul Halmos (a great read) An Introduction to Mechanics by Daniel Kleppner and Rober Kolenkow
  27. College Selection Help

The only colleges I can think of off the top of my head that makes the distinction at the undergraduate level are UC Davis and Harvard. Generally, this distinction doesn't exists until graduate school since every math major needs to take the basic courses: Analysis, Algebra, Discrete...
  28. MFE vs. MBA in investment banking. (what do MFE guys usualy do)

  29. the reason I failed to get to TOP school...GRE writing filter?

GPA? Math courses taken? Programming courses?
  30. getting accepted to MQF/MFE or PHD with low GPA

Those scores are valid for 5 years. You should apply before they expire unless you want to take it again.
  31. Good Book for Advanced Calculus

One Calculus book isn't going to help you on the GRE Math Subject Test. What math courses have you taken?
  32. Why did you choose Quantitative Finance?

I gave you the resources to figure that out on your own.
  33. Why did you choose Quantitative Finance?

OES branch of the Federal Govt has a mean of 113k. Go to bureau of labor and statistics and you can view all the information. University mean is 83k. However, Chi has mean of 130k.
  34. Good Book for Advanced Calculus

Mentioning Calculus 3 points him in the right direction.
  35. Good Book for Advanced Calculus

I used Larson Edwards and Hostelter too. Big ass book.
  36. Good Book for Advanced Calculus

I don't consider advanced calculus to be calculus 3. Since in some institutions, adv calc is undergrad real analysis.
  37. Why did you choose Quantitative Finance?

The median is 10k shy of the avg. and is the 15th highest paying job. You understand median right? There are 16k people in this field. 8k of them are earning higher than 102k. 50% isn't a few.
  38. Good Book for Advanced Calculus

Calculus 3 books covers those topics.
  39. Why did you choose Quantitative Finance?

According to BLS the median is 102k so it isn't that bad either.

  41. GRE Math Subject Test

The practices exams don't do the test any justice now. I took the test in Nov. 2010, and the taking the practice test didn't help. Even the practice test supplied by the GRE isn't anyway comparable to the test they will give you on test. However, there are 3 versions. Version C is the hardest...
  42. GRE Math Subject Test

I don't know if you have taken the test recently, but I can tell you from the one I took, Nov 2010, I needed to know almost every major Theorem in all subjects. My test wasn't full of that many computations. Knowing how to use Lagrange to compute |G| or |<g>| wasn't asked because that is simply...
  43. GRE Math Subject Test

I don't know your background, but the GRE Math Subject Test is hard if you are a math major. I think if you took it, it would just be a waste of your money. Do you know Abstract Alg, Linear Alg, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Discrete, Calc based Stats, Topology, Calc 1-3,DE, Number Theory...
  44. What books are you currently reading?

Python Programming: An Introduction to Computer Science by John Zelle Linear Algebra by Charles Curtis Abstract Algebra by David Dummit & Richard Foote Introduction to Analysis by Maxwell Rosenlicht
  45. Help with MATH course selection for MFE

PDE would have some functional analysis, Green's Function, heat eq (Black Scholes), Laplace which is used in probability, and many more benefits.

I was reading some where that you can't really trust what some battery makers say about the battery. I just got the Evo batter since it is the HTC battery, so I have more faith in the posted battery size. With 1500mAh, I am getting 7-8 hours of above avg use and 15-18 hours of low use.
  47. Did you see you can use the Evo 3D battery upside down in your sensation? It is 1730mAh and is...

Did you see you can use the Evo 3D battery upside down in your sensation? It is 1730mAh and is only 29.99 whereas others are selling one for the Sensation at 49.99.

I have ran every ROM, this one is by far the fastest, and I have not had a force close. Everyone seems to love Android Revolution HD, but I can't seem to understand why. I have been reading that people will receive black screens they can't fix, the battery will go from 90% to 20%, and other...

What ROM are you using on your Sensation now? I am using CrystalPyramid v1.04 and the LeeDroid Unity kernel v1.05. It is insanely fast, no force closes, T-Mo WiFi calling works no matter your service, no GPS problems, etc.
  54. Help me out on choosing which path to go please

I have seen on a lot of MFE schools websites that students should have taken Real Analysis, Linear Alg, DE, Calc based Stats, and maybe PDE.
  55. College majors

There aren't many Algebra classes as in groups, rings, and fields but Linear Alg comes into play a lot. If you want to take functional analysis, you will have to have some background in Algebra.
  56. Is my GRE score sufficient to enter in a top notch MFE program?

To both Andy and Alexei, I would disagree. I am a PhD student in math. However, I have been so far removed from trivial mathematics that I find it more taxing then advanced mathematics. I would rather do math beyond calculus any day then basic algebra. It is a different mindset. When you do...
  57. Is my GRE score sufficient to enter in a top notch MFE program?

The math courses that each student took and the grade they obtained should be more important than an 800Q. If someone can get an A in Real Analysis, A in Linear Alg, A in DE, and an A in PDE, that should hold more weight.
  58. Is my GRE score sufficient to enter in a top notch MFE program?

Yes, but to use that test as a metric at all seems a little arbitrary. I know people who taken both the general and subject tests and scored under a 700 on the general but crushed the subject.
  59. Is my GRE score sufficient to enter in a top notch MFE program?

Why do these quant schools look so hard at the Quant section of the GRE? That section has no parallel with upper level mathematics. If you can do algebra and have a pulse, it is a no brainer. If these school were so concerned about Quant score, shouldn't they have the students take the GRE...
  60. Rutgers MSMF Rutgers MSMF or Stevens Institute MFE?

Out of curiosity, if you go as a non-degree to NYU, do you have the option to switch to degree seeking if your performance is up to par? If so, I would go as non-degree and deliver academic wise.
  61. Survey of forum members backgrounds/credibility

  62. Legalize illegal immigration, YES or NO

I am not sure if this has been said in the thread, but there are 10,000 immigration investment program visa's per year. So there is a quick way that is legal. An individual has to loan the govt either 500k or 1mm depending on the investment. The individual receives a temporary green card...
  63. Survey of forum members backgrounds/credibility

How is that demanding? Maybe you are too cynical and view the question as aggressive. I read it as an innocent question which isn't inappropriate. It is understandable to want know who is answering your questions. Think of school--the first day the professor gives you a syllabus with his...
  64. Overkill

I don't start until this spring; however, I am thinking about PDE, wavelets, maybe something with Complex Analysis, or Functional Analysis.
  65. Overkill

I do earn an income. I get paid to attend school. My reasoning is that I would think a financial institution might want to see some sort of Mathematical Finance not just a PhD in Math per se.
  66. What phone do you have?

I use the Body Glove. The case is so hard to take off that stealing your phone and replacing the SIM card would be a bigger hassle than buying your own. Also, the case is a hard plastic not gel. I believe due to the smooth of the plastic on impacts it will deflect more than the gel case which...

  70. Overkill

Greetings, In Jan., I will be starting a PhD in Applied Mathematics at the Colorado School of Mines. However, I was thinking about pursuing a MS in Financial Math afterwards. Would that be complete overkill or a good idea? Thank you for your time, Dustin.
