  1. PhD in Physics and Chemistry

Out of curiosity, why are physicists in such demand in the financial engineering industry ? Also, why do employers like doctoral students in chemistry who have concentrated on physical chem ? My friend recently finished her Phd in Chemistry with a concentration in physical chem and her main area...
  2. Probability vs Partial Differential Equations approach at Schools

I've recently been told by my professor that when applying to an MFE, there are usually two schools of thought, either the school emphasizes PDE's or probability. What i'm most interested in is knowing which schools MFE programs emphasize PDE.

  7. Second BS or MS Please Help!

In replying to both MRoss and Martingale, the reason I can't do an MS in CS at this point is because I have only taken introductory programming and obviously don't have the option to apply to an MS program in CS. I looked over the schedule at my school and within the next 3 semesters I would be...

  13. Online Courses

I suggest you apply to an undergraduate program and take the basic math courses such as college algebra/trig and precalculus. After going back to college in such a long time, it's best to be in class rather than an online course.

  19. Math courses for quant

Yes, but PDE for Finance is taught at the graduate level. I think learning PDE can come later. It's better to first build a solid ground in programming and analysis. But everyone has their own opinions.
  20. Goldman plans to spin off prop trading

hmmm......interesting. Does this influence quant positions in that business sector ?
  21. Math courses for quant

As a statistics major, you should definitely take stochastic processes and montecarlo simulation. Furthermore, a course in numerical analysis and one financial mathematics course focusing on derivatives pricing can be very helpful. I believe ordinary differential equations is good course to...
  22. "MFE program profile evaluation" master thread

Based on experience alone, you are a well qualified applicant. You should understand that financial engineering is highly mathematically rigorous. The concern is your grades. Especially the intro to programming and probability and stochastic processes. These are the underlying base of FE, so it...
  23. Am I qualified for admission to MFE?

I think you're strong on the finance side but very weak on the mathematics and programming segment. Relative to top MFE programs, your application is fairly weak. What i would suggest is appling to a MS Finance program. Look for MFin. that allow you to incorporate a lot of quant electives.
