dude, currently 160k doing verification and going for mfe is 95% in the wrong direction.
  2. NYU MSMF 2012 Employment for NYU Math Finance program

As with all programs, that's the published employment stats, but the real employment stats is another thing. It's complicated. Then need to look at quality of the placements, etc. make it even more complicated. Anyway, it's all marketing craps ..
  3. Seeking Business Partner

Dude, seriously, your idea is one of the worst. Please don't bring it up to any angel investor. They will be laughing out loud. The best part of the site is the girl. Anything other than that, forget about it.
  4. Tuition

Did it affect mba tuition too? For mba, in-state residents are less than 50k per year, so the cost of 2 years mba are not much higher than 1 year mfe. Plus if get some scholarship for the mba, the tuition cost would be the same.
  5. Tuition

Just observed the berkeley tuition for next year class is about 60k, 5k increase from incoming class this year, and I believe current graduating class was 50k. So 5k increase each year for the last two years. Also saw similar increase from ucla this year. Not sure other schools are doing the...

  7. 2011-2012 Quantnet Ranking of Financial Engineering (MFE) Programs

alex krause is the only sensible baruch person so far. If I am the hiring manager, and I read this thread, I would have a negative impression about baruch and its graduate. Nothing personal, it doesn't mean the students or the program are bad, or the students won't get hired. It just means it's...
  8. 2011-2012 Quantnet Ranking of Financial Engineering (MFE) Programs

This thread is hilarious. Couldn't stop laughing. People are so green or just naive. I wish there are more people decline MIT/Princeton/Standford to go to a community college. Unfortunately, it's not true in the real world. EMalu is just being a bad ass even though he got valid points. Just...
  9. Some Recruiting Agents Exploit Chinese Students

    >>Some Recruiting Agents Exploit Chinese Students I don't think this is one way. It's rather both ways. It's all about competitive advantage. It's a complicated matter, rather than pure black and white. It does put a lot of people, including myself who don't have fake essay, recommendation...
  10. COMPARE UCLA MFE vs UChicago MSFM

Good for you finding it out. Surprised that Chicago told you most people are from China.
  11. COMPARE UCLA MFE vs UChicago MSFM

I'm not going to disclose the details, I don't feel it's my responsibility to disclose that either. hey, my source told me the information can be lying to me too, who knows for sure. But I will say I have 90% confidence. If the candidate is very interested in a program, he/she should find out...
  12. COMPARE UCLA MFE vs UChicago MSFM

Remember while you can look at the placement reports, you can't trust everything you see there. The UCLA 2010 class was better in terms of placement (more students found job at graduation) than 2009 class, due to the economy/job market. >> better quality of education I think that depends on you...
  13. CMU MSCF New CMU MSCF student profiles page

Indeed cool, better marketing, better brand.
  14. COMPARE UCLA MFE vs UChicago MSFM

Tough choice, two very different programs, difficult for comparison, much easier to compare UCLA and berkeley. Also, depends on if you want to stay in CA and Chicago, both should do well in their respected area.
  15. COMPARE UCLA MFE vs. USC MFE vs. CGU MFE

Are you talking about the regular deposit for commitment to the program or tuition for the semester? I know people who paid deposit but couldn't attend due to personal or family issues. I'm just curious if they had two different standards. > abcdefh - from what I understand they normally don't...
  16. COMPARE UCLA MFE vs. USC MFE vs. CGU MFE

I thought they don't allow deferral? > Alphaseeker - I got in last year and was permitted to differ due to family issues.
  17. For those who Planning to work at Asia

I like your sarcasm. How's this -- if your are non-Asian (white esp.), decent-looking, and you can speak mandarin or cantonese, why you wouldn't want to work in Asia in finance? You would be worth much more over there than London or NY.
  18. For those who Planning to work at Asia

Don't worry, in the long term, cantonese as well as its culture will be reduced at a point that it won't be matter any more, just like any evolution. So I will suggest go long for mandarin, as for cantonese, forget about it. it's depreciating faster than the value of the dollar.

  21. Importance of GPA for applicants with good work experience

As you said, you already have 4 years of programming experience and you know finance, you want to do quant. work - developer, etc. Then just apply the job directly. MFE programs don't teach you programming, take a look at the curriculums on the schools websites. The degree adds little value...
  22. Importance of GPA for applicants with good work experience

Another waste of time and $$, and it just doesn't make any sense in general. My opinion is that it's a wrong path to take. If you like programming, do it on your spare time.
  23. "MFE program profile evaluation" master thread

Ditto. Waste of time and money. Unless you like going back to school for the fun of it.
  24. Chicago MSFM U of Chicago MSFM still good? The founding director is fired?

When the information you are asking is publicly available, either on the school website or at another place, then it goes to show if you are really interested. Spend your time to do the research ..
  25. "MFE program profile evaluation" master thread

looking at ur profile, waste of $ to do mfe. math phd is better, but more toward industry route. academia route doesn't sound good for you, besides, it'll be much tougher to be a professor@topschools, competing with those IMO background ppl.
  26. "MFE program profile evaluation" master thread

    >> Two time winner of state American Mathematical Competition, the prerequisite to the AIME and USAMO. That ain't the prereq. It's ASIME, maybe they have changed the name now. But you don't need to win the state to get invited to the AIME. >> 780/790 True a lot of people get 800, but it...
  27. BS/MBA Accounting switch to Quant advice wanted

my 2 cents : if you want to do a CS degree for fun, sure. If you love to do programming work, you don't need the degree. If you want to use the degree as a stepping stone, then you are likely be better off with a math degree. hmm, what else? oh well, it sounds you already have a good job...
  28. UCLA MFE What do you think of UCLA's full time placement

It's their first class stat., so relying on 1 year data cannot be very accurate. ucla is indeed one of the most interesting program to follow, compared to other newer program.
  29. Dilemma

  30. Need some help deciding b/w diff programs

Unless you love MFE and tech stuff, MBA is probably a better option for you.
  31. Dilemma

As many have pointed out, location for MFE program is also important, e.g. Columbia, NYU graduates will tend to work in NY, UChicago ... chicago, etc. How about Asia? which program in your opinion will place the best in Asia? Those CA schools ? - berkeley and ucla - closet to Asia.
  32. Dilemma

Thanks all you guys for the replies. Connor -- I understand what you mean. Nothing is impossible, but I know the probability of getting into top schools is rather low, more likely getting into not so top school. I would just do Stat. or Applied math. alain -- I'm 29 already. A number of my...
  33. Dilemma

    >> If I was as smart as you make yourself sound, I think I would go for a PhD. As more people are getting MFEs Trust me, I'm not as smart as some of my friends, everything is relative. There is always someone else who is more intelligent. As for phD, yeah, I would love to, after all these...
  34. Dilemma

yeah, I will be required to submit the transcript as part of the application, no doubt. But that only shows all A in math courses which is just linear algebra, multi-calculus, differential equations, discrete math, abstract algebra. Honestly, I slept through all most of those courses since I...
