MFE Career Path

Hi, All

Actually, I am still a little bit unsure about MFE career path. So after a MFE degree, is it still useful to go to a MBA program after work for a few years? I feel if one wants to get to managing position, MBA degree is still quite important right ? A MFE degree may help you land a job in financial sector, but once when you try to move up, will MFE help you anymore? What kind of education will one pursue after MFE? just go for more and more working experience? Thank you all!

I don't think you would do MFE and then an MBA unless you wanted to change jobs/industry (such as getting out of quant finance). I imagine promotion would be based on work experience, but it would depend on your organization. As a quant you could start your own fund and be in a management role, but as for CEO of GS I doubt MFE would be the way to go.

After MFE you could go PhD. There are also a few MBA/MFE joint degree programs.

If you're good you can go up in your field with only a bachelors degree. I know of a person who is also my professor, who just has an undergrad in physics and was recently an MD at Credit Suisse. He was for 10+ years an MD at Merril Lynch before that. I also know of an MD at a large american BB who frequently posts here who just has a MS in Stats and Comp Sci.

So.... MBA is not a requirement.
