  1. Kangaroo jumps

You're right on actually. The idea is to show that pZ + qZ with p/q irrational is dense in R. So, it works with other numbers than 1 and pi. You just need to pick a random element x in R, and build a sequence un in pZ+qZ that converges towards x.
  2. Kangaroo jumps

Spring break was 3 weeks ago! ;-) would be the first time texas was ahead of NYC for anything ;-)
  3. Kangaroo jumps

OK, looks like you guys don't like Kangaroos. So, I'll reword the problem. Show that if you play with your money and can either win or lose by $1 or by $pi then, 'given enough time', you can hit any amount (positive or negative)
  4. Is one C++ programming course enough?

If it ain't broken, it doesn't have enough features (engineering maxim). More seriously, it does make sense to use VBA for this kind of stuff. It was designed for that. No need for programming pedantry. If a simple language does the job well, use it. \\:D/
  5. Is one C++ programming course enough?

VBA being an extremely flexible language (very much like python), it's hardly testing anyone to ask 'write an app for a specific host, in VBA that does xxx'. Anyone proficient in C++ could learn VBA in a matter of days. C++ on the other hand is a huge multi-paradigm language. It takes a lot...
  6. Is one C++ programming course enough?

just avoid at all costs the books that present C++ as an imperative language and don't teach you how to implement in an OO way. You might as well learn C then
  7. Is one C++ programming course enough?

I guess this being my area, and having discussed, thought about it a lot, I have a lot to say. In general, you do not get proficient in a language while taking a class. You get proficient at a language by programming. There is no way around it. You can go check Peter Norvig's website. He is the...
  8. Recruiters?

As a matter of fact this is what I am doing. I can't really leave my job before August anyway. My colleagues are also my friends, and leaving would imply that some projects couldn't be finished. I have bought several books of the MFE program. I guess some will be easy reading like Shreve. I'm...
  9. Is one C++ programming course enough?

I will add a bit more. I am currently a faculty in Computer Science with a dual PhD in math and CS planning to shift to quant I have taught several programming languages, however, I haven't taught C++. Now, to expect to be proficient in C++ after one class is extremely optimistic. C++ is a very...
  10. EXCLUSIVE: Free Amazon book for Quantnet members

Some people are in a joking mood today...what day is it already?
  11. more free web brainteasers

Well, I guess you're not the only cycling fan here (or only frenchie?) Besides my job, I have been racing triathlons for 15 years, several years cat 1 in cycling. So, maybe we can open a cycling sub-forum somewhere? Btw...the data are skewed because it doesn't distinguish real prologues (under...
  12. Recruiters?

Note to the admin of the forum: I am not yet familiar with the rules of the forum. This post is quite self-serving as I'm posting again what I posted in welcomes, so feel free to pull it off if necessary. --------------------------- Hi all (recruiters) my name is Francois. I'm a french-aussie...
  13. Kangaroo jumps

Being half aussie, I can't resist to not give this one: you have a Kangaroo on a 2-D plane. It only makes jumps of length pi and 1, and only along the x-axis and the y-axis (either jump length along the x and y axes). Assume the plane large enough (larger than pi x pi ), if you pick a random...
  14. CS/Math Person going to quant...maybe

Which is why I came here. I know that what I have done so far applies very well to Computational Finance etc. The typical datasets you get in biology are similar to what you get in Finance actually. But indeed, without knowing anyone, it's a bit tricky. I hope my vitae will generate some...
  15. CS/Math Person going to quant...maybe

Hi all, my name is Francois. I'm a french-aussie residing in the US (I let you figure what accent it gives ;-) ). I have a PhD (1999) in Computer Science-Mathematics, a MS in Applied Mathematics and a BS in CS and Mathematics. After 8 years in Academia, I'm getting tired of it and am in need...
