The Master’s in Asset Management program is a STEM-eligible, quantitatively intense nine-month program that was developed by the late David Swensen ’80 PhD, Yale’s former chief investments officer and the pioneer of the “Yale Model” and Tobias Moskowitz, Dean Takahashi ’80 B.A., ’83 M.P.P.M. Professor of Finance and a principal at AQR Capital Management. Focusing on ethical and responsible investing, they designed a unique program dedicated to the merging of academic theory and practice.

Students in this program will receive training in all aspects of asset management, including investment selection, asset allocation, portfolio management, and risk management, with a focus on forward-looking quantitative methods and new technologies in this rapidly changing field.

For anyone interested in finance with exposure to quantitative coursework, or anyone considering applying a computer science or engineering background to the investment industry, the Yale SOM Master’s in Asset Management program can provide a specialized skillset to secure a job in a field where your background will be highly valued.

The Master’s in Asset Management has one admissions cycle, with the Class of 2026 application due date scheduled for early January 2025. The new application will become available this fall. Please check the website for updates.

Wonderful program to break into asset management, especially for those with quantitative background
Class of
2024
Overall the AM program is amazing. The admissions team assess candidates holistically, and they want to know you as a person, your vision, and your motivation to apply for the program. The core courses reaches a balance between quantitative and qualitative parts of asset management - the courses are quantitative, intense, and data driven, which equips students with the ability to analyze financial data to have a better understanding of the market movements, the drivers/factors of returns, and to better develop trading strategies. More importantly, a lot of the professors of the program also work at hedge funds such as AQR as practitioners. Therefore, students are taught not only the theories on paper but also how these theories are applied and implemented in the real-world, which is super valuable. Students are welcome to talk to career development coaches to practice their interview skills and seek their advice all the time.

Generalized opportunity

For a 1 year program student placements are good (factoring in the benefit of being able to work earlier but the cost of no internship opportunities during the summer). Professors are excellent as well as the people in the program. Since the program is highly selective admissions is able to create a well functioning, diverse cohort.
