I'd like to buy a workstation to do statistical computing with 64-bit R/Octave/Python. what hardware will you recommend? what OS? Any suggestion would be highly appreciated.

i have stat background and been in retail banking for a while. i can play SAS and R like toys and know python reasonably well. if i want to get into investment banking, I am wondering if I have to learn C++, which is new to me. any insight would be greatly appreciated.
