agreed with kpc, actually it doesnt matter which program you are enrolled in. The employers dont really distinguish between MAFN MFE or any of the other programs at columbia. It is just viewed as a quantitative degree from columbia. What matters is whether you know the fundamentals (...
they will not let u do both mafn and stats since u can take all the classes the mafn student can take as a stats student. your resume would either read stats- emphasis in quant finance
or math finance
you can be admitted to both, but you can only pick one of those for your degree. since there is so much overlap (85%) you can take all your courses in math finance and still get a degree in stat with 3 other stat courses. I think 6 of the required 8 courses in math fin are stat courses. It...
also, hawaii would be a great place to settle down if you are able to get a semi decent offer around there.. the question becomes is it well reputed in Hawaii?
just take some courses see what you like.. you are just a freshmen correct? you have plenty of time to decide. if you wanna break into finance, it doesnt matter what major you are ( like anthony said). But if you wanna break into quant finance, you better know some programming as you come...
that is a close call. I would say pick Vandy MSF. I think they are more reputed in MSF than Gtech is in MFE. I also think their placements are much better - you could check with anthony.
I did an MSF myself, but feel like an MFE might have been a better track for me.
Given your interests...
ive heard very negative things about USC MFE.. i think their MSMF is the better program. Looks like UMN is the way to go. it has a very strong math department
10 students at 8K each leads to a loss of 80K~ basically giving out one full scholarship. It would be hard to imagine students deferring their admission without set jobs/ other commitments for a year
MIT Mfin can basically be a quant degree depending on the electives, or track you take. If i had a choice between the 2, Id definitely pick MIT. Since you can tailor your education more to your interests and you have the "MIT" brand name. I know that Andy is not too huge on brand name. But...
hi,
this is what i have heard about the CGU MFE program as I have friends in the program
-------------------------------------------------------
from what I hear, if you are a top 5-7 student in the program, you are guaranteed a job in ur preferred field of interest ( quant trading...
@canti
Hello,
i graduated from irvine as well. it is definitely tough getting a job as a quant out of undergrad from irvine. i chose to go to claremont mfin, but will go to columbia next year.. feel free to message me if you want to talk
thanks for the advice, guys.. i will contact the department tomorrow to see how flexible they really are in letting you take the courses you are interested in.
hi bobltrdr,
do you know how easy it is to switch programs within Columbia; ie stats to IEOR , etc. Do i need to file a new application or could i talk to the admin to see which program might be the best fit for my interests? When I talked to the stats department, they seemed to be really...
hey andy and others; you guys have done a great job with this site. lots of information. I should have posted this last year but here it is...
any opinions please?
I wanted to go into quant/equity derivatives trading or structuring initially. But chose the path of going to a very good...
