Anyone have experience using any website designers?

I have used designers, firms with various degree of success.
If it's for a club website, you can use Wordpress platform and get one of the many free themes out there. It's a huge platform so you should have no problem finding tutorials on how to do things.
If you are going to maintain the website, you should learn to use and fix it.

I would recommend using Joomla. It's got a bit of a learning curve but I did it and found it well worth it. Some of the Joomla templates out there are very professional and once you get the hang of it they are very easy to manipulate.
