CUNY Receives Record $75 Million Gift From Simons Foundation

The City University of New York is receiving a $75 million donation from the Simons Foundation, which will be used for computational science and a major AI initiative.

The City University of New York (CUNY), the nation’s largest urban public university system, is being given a $75 million donation from the Simons Foundation, according to an announcement today from New York Governor Kathy Hochul. The gift, the largest in CUNY’s history, will be used to advance computational science and artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives for the system.
One portion of the gift -$25 million – will help underwrite CUNY’s participation in Empire AI – Hochul’s proposal for a consortium of the state’s research universities and other institutions that would form an artificial intelligence computing center in upstate New York.
The remaining $50 million from the donation will be used to hire a director for the AI project, add 25 new faculty members and establish a master’s program in computational science at CUNY’s Graduate Center. Funds will also support student financial aid and research experiences.
