I wanted to know if the coursework in the MAFN program that covers topics found in the Columbia's MSFE core course IEOR E4007: Optimization Models and Methods for Financial Engineers?

Is this a question?

Is this a question?

Sorry - there was a typo -- but to clarify:
I basically want to know if the courses part of the MAFN program would adequately cover the topics in the E4007: Optimization Models and Methods for Financial Engineers, or if I should take a separate optimization course as an elective in the MAFN program.

Don't know if this has been addressed already but the FE is not (necessarily) a one yr program. As per the website http://ieor.columbia.edu/curriculum/259?tid=329. In the past I believe courses started in the summer for incoming students whereas now they don't start until the fall. You can opt to continue courses the following summer to graduate in a year or complete an internship instead and do it in 1.5 yrs.

Can you apply to both? Which one would you choose? Why?

By MSFE are you referring to their masters in financial engineering or masters in financial economics?

From the top of my mind (to be taken with a grain of salt), MFE was for a long-time the flagship program, but is slowly decaying in rankings, and being surpassed by MAFN
What I would recommend is the following:

1. Speak to people from both programs, and get their well-formed opinions.
2. Look up other threads on this forum. If I were to go search in the search bar, I would find at least 10 threads with the same poll and the same question.

Hope this helps.

If I had to choose between Columbia MFE vs. Columbia MAFN, which one should I choose and why?

Hi,

I am a 2nd Year UCL / LSE / Warwick economics student, looking to get into the buy side, specifically macro HFs in the US. Based off of the following attributes, could people provide some advice on which of the two courses above should I apply for, assuming for, adjusting for likelihood of getting in + exits provided by the programme.

- 4.0 GPA across 1st and 2nd Years
- Strong scores in Linear Algebra and Econometrics modules
- Summer internships within M&A at a MM boutique, and S&T at GS / JP / MS
- basic programming knowledge across python and R

Thanks
