Hi everyone,

  • I recently got into a Math PhD program, but my interest lies more along the lines of Quantitative Finance. Apparently, I am supposed to take either Complex I or Topology this fall semester. Which do you think is more beneficial?

  • I was thinking of taking the CFA exam level I exam in Dec. Should I or should I not? Now I know this is not a requirement, but I have NO experience in Finance - my undergrad internships were in Math, Math/CS, Physics and Bio-chem; my majors were math & physics; the closest courses/internships relating to finance, were courses for my math major (Actuarial Sci. conc): Micro&Macro-Econ, Accounting I. The exam (if I pass), would be my way of saying "Hey, I may not have experience, but I have the motivation & knowledge."

Ps.
don't know if these factor in, but... I am looking to apply for finance-related internships next summer -- a reason why I was looking to take the CFA in Dec. Also, I went to college in a HBCU (Historically Black Collge/University), and currently attending another HBCU for graduate school -- it is kind of difficult to get internships as opposed to 'Ivy Leaguers'/bigger schools. I need every advantage I can get.

Complex Analysis.

Given your background, CFA Level I would be a plus.
