I am considering doing technical and applied research relevant to quantitative finance, but not any abstract or completely original research that typical profs or phd students do. If this research is relevant to the focus areas of MFE, would getting it published in undergrad journals or SSRN/arXiv hold weight and boost chances of admission?

I think it will help to show your maturity. If everything equal, having publication will be a plus.
Would publications be as good as internships (not quant ones obviously, but aiml or data science roles)?
Also, which types of journals or papers should I target- do I just need to get a publication or find a more reputable journal?
