Excel or Matlab?

First of all pardon my English,
I have a MSc in Finance and I wish to work in a financial institution. Now I have time to study a computer program that is usually used in this institution. My question is which computer program is more useful and requested? Excel(VBA) or Matlab?

Excel VBA is much more common than Matlab.

Matlab usually used by PhDs to write model prototypes.
