Mate of mine at work just pointed me to this website, and I haven't seen it discussed here before.

datamining, trading algo design, all sorts of problems posted and crowd-sourced (for want of a less wanky term) for solutions, and if you win, you can earn some decent cash.
But it looks like a pretty cool way to get exposure to and practical experience with large data sets, interesting problems, and maybe even be involved with something that might be beneficial to society
