Networking: Where to start (Columbia MAFN student)

I will most likely be taking Columbia MAFN. My other choice is MSOR. I did not apply to any 3~4 semesters program due to financial reasons.

Anyways, I am aware that MAFN is a "do it yourself" program in terms of career services. So I plan on networking as early as possible. Fortunately, I will be interning this summer as a technology analyst at a major IB's trading desk. How should I go about establishing network inside this firm this summer to later take advantage of?

Also, how do people go about establishing networks in general?

I have read his post. It was impressive. I will definitely try establishing connections with my peers and profs.
Joy mentions as one of the methods, the conferences. What are some good professional conferences out there?
I've found several specifically for risk managers (GARP, PRMIA), but I'm curious if there are more.
