Hi everyone,

I’m a recent graduate, and I am going to join a bank next year as a mortgage quant. My role will primarily involve working with mortgage-backed securities (MBS), including RMBS, CMBS, and AMBS. My responsibilities will include data analysis and management using Python/SQL, as well as modeling in Python.

I have a few questions I’d like to seek advice on:
  1. How do you view the future prospects of the MBS asset class? Is it a growing or stable area within the financial industry?
  2. What are some potential career paths or development opportunities in this space? Specifically, would it be feasible to transition to the buy side from this role?
  3. If I decide to shift focus in the future, is it common for professionals in the MBS space to move into other asset classes? If so, which ones?
I’d really appreciate any insights or advice you can share based on your experience. Thank you in advance.
