Hey guys, thanks for reading this post. I've just received my offer from oxford and I'm really excited. However I'm still waiting decisions from Columbia and I'm a bit struggling from choosing between this two.

Columbia does have geographic advantages however i have commitments to my gf so staying shouldn't be my first preference. Both of these two programs are fairly expensive, both of them are quite theoretical and I don't actually have preference choosing between UK or US system.

Both of these two universities have quite shining brand-names so I am really confused should I accept this offer directly and withdrawal from columbia's application or should I keep waiting for columbia?

thx a lot guys.

Dude! Not helpful!
P.S one of my buddies spent 4 years in NYC now he's still single....

I've actually studied this pretty extensively, though, and do believe generally that NY has better-looking women than London does... plus, unless you happen to have a penchant for bloody sausage submerged in grease, the food is much better in America.

If you want to go back to Australia there will be only marginal difference after all, although Oxford will be cheaper especially in terms of living expenses. I am currently at MCF course so PM me if you have any questions.

Hi @reflection_principle , I am going to Oxford this September for MCF and would like to ask you few questions. But there seems to be a problem to PM you. I guess you set to refuse others messages or is it problem of my account? If possible, could you send me a message please? Thanks.

Hello. I am a Chinese student. I want to know which program has a better career development. I also want to know which program has better placement in China. Besides, if I work for three years in USA, will it do much help to find a better job in China compared with immediately going back to China after the study in MAFN? Thank you.

probably Oxford if you want to go to china. There's a ton of Chinese kids in Columbia's grad programs. Think Stats, Operations Research, MAFN, etc. And a lot of them (not MAFN though) end up in China bc they couldn't get jobs here. So Columbia's brand image in China is definitely diluted. But if you have the skillset and people skills, you can get almost any job you want in the US (IB, trading, hedge funds, etc) thanks to the Columbia name. Obviously the Oxford name is "better" but not having attended Oxford myself, I don't know how a grad student at Oxford will be viewed by IB's, HF's, PE firms, etc.

Hi everyone, I’m an international student currently studying math in the U.S., and I’ve received offers from two programs. I’m having a hard time deciding which one to accept and would love to hear your thoughts.

I’m aware that salaries in the U.S. are way higher than in the U.K., but I’m also concerned that the competition among students in the U.S. is more intense. Personally, I don’t really mind the weather—neither NYC nor London has great weather anyway!

My main goal right now is to gain international work experience and eventually return to the APAC region for my long-term career. Given that, does anyone have insights or experiences that could help me make this decision?

Thanks in advance!

Congrats on the two offers. Please share these great achievements on our Tracker so other applicants can gauge their chance to get into both programs.
Oxford has a 14% acceptance rate while Columbia MAFN has a 22% acceptance rate. Both will have brand name cachet in APAC region, Oxford slightly more.
@Ascle has some good point about UK visa.
Good rule of thumb is to go to the best program in your immediate target job market. So you want to work in the US after school, go to the US program.
In UK, you will have less competition for jobs than the US. Each side has pros and cons.

There are a few similar comparisons in the past

Thanks, Andy. Right now, I’m leaning towards MAFN, but I’m still in the process of deciding and haven’t made up my mind yet. I’ve been in the States for almost eight years, and it would be a shame to lose the opportunity to stay here—especially since all my friends are here too.
