I'm planning to apply for MFE programs for Fall 2026 and I'm reaching for CMU. Below is my profile.

I'm a domestic applicant and still preparing for the GRE. I'm an applied math major with 3.86 GPA from Umass Boston. I've taken some relevant courses like probability, probability models, statistics and machine learning). I can program in python/R but my projects are only from my courses and not related to finance. I have no work experience.

I would love to get advice on how to improve my application to get into CMU and other top tier programs as well. Thank you.

Take the C++ course here. CMU will require you to complete that anyway. This will address your programming weakness.
I assume you completed all the math requirements.
Your focus then will be on provide a strong reasons and preparation for "why MFE", "why CMU", why etc.
Take a look at this post by an ex-CMU career advisor. Many of those to-do lists will help your applications.
