Quantitative Portfolio Management - MFE Role?

Is an MFE candidate only expected to make models in Quantitative Portfolio Management or he can have more managerial role too? What are the various career advancement roles someone can go in??

I have seen MFE graduates end up in many different roles across all level of the bank so obviously I wouldn't pigeonhole anyone with the degree he has. It's almost a cliche to say the degree gets you in the door but not where you end up.
Tim Grant is one that comes to mind.
