Should I hold onto application until I get the result for FRM?

I am not an international student, trying to apply for class of 2014 for eight different programs, which are Princeton, Columbia, NYU, CMU, Berkeley, Cornell, MIT, and U of Chicago. I have submitted the application for Berkeley already, but other seven schools' deadlines are in end of December at the earliest. I know that CMU has a set of rounds and the first round's deadline is 11/11.

My main concern is that I am signed up for FRM Level 1 exam on 11/16. I was hoping to get the FRM result then apply to different schools, but it seems like the result for FRM is not out until early January based on the past exams.

Currently in my SOP, I wrote "I am currently preparing for FRM Level 1 exam in November." Given that I pass the FRM exam, how much impact would that have on my admission chance compared to being a FRM exam candidate? If that change will cause a lot of difference, I will probably hold off submission until I get the result (which may not come in on time). Does anybody have thoughts on this? Thanks in advance.

This is quite a tricky situation. Most of the above schools shortlist you for an interview if you have a strong profile. You can convey during then that you have cleared the exam if you had (I hope you do!).

If you have a lot of other aspects on your profile that are impressive, you could probably apply in the earlier rounds. If FRM is one aspect that you believe is gonna make a considerable difference, then you could put off applying to a later round. And for those that have deadline in Dec, there is nothing you can do so I suggest you mention on the SOP about your performance in the exam.

Also, speak to the admission co-ordinators at these programs and ask if they allow you to append additional material after you've submitted the application (if you wish to let the committee know ASA you get the FRM result). If they do, then you can worry less and submit the app early while still being able to give this news too.

Good luck!
