I am a rising junior and had recently decided to pursue a career as a quant and hope to enroll in a financial engineering program right after undergrad. As a result of this, I am a little bit behind in terms of classes that these programs require as prerequisites. If I were to stay at my undergrad university for an extra 6 months to, or take classes there over the summer instead of pursuing a finance related internship, do you feel my chances of gaining admission into one of these programs would decrease?

Thanks in advance

Only a guess, but your plan makes sense to me. I would imagine you'd be a lot less competitive if you were missing more than one of the prerequisites than if you extended your undergrad by one semester. If possible, can you work while doing your final courses? If you had a relevant or semi-relevant internship or job during your 'extra' undergrad semester, I don't see why it would be an issue.

What prerequisites are you missing?
Also I suggest you do the finance internship. That really shows interest in the field and gives you an edge - many applicants never worked in the industry and are trying to get in.
