Why do MFE/MFin/MSFM/MSCF programs care about other programs you've applied to?

This question to me came off as quite dubious. I can think of one reason/scenario when this may be useful- if a student is accepted into two or more programs, it might benefit the adcoms to get information about other deadlines.

Is this question commonplace in graduate school applications? Playing the devil's advocate here- how will this affect admission chances?🤔
