Applied vs Theoretical Degree

I've recently gotten my B.S. in Pure Mathematics and I'm starting my Master's degree. I'm debating whether to get my degree in Applied Math (it would be rather theoretical in focus, though; likely in Quantitative Neuroscience) or in Stats. I've read that a lot of firms like candidates with backgrounds in theoretical fields because they are able to create new models and ideas and to test abstract ideas before implementing them. However, any M.S. or PhD in a theoretical field of Math or Science (e.g., Pure Math or Theoretical Physics) is going to require lots of investment in material that will likely never be used in financial engineering. Do you think getting a degree in Applied Math/Stats with a theoretical focus would be as good an option? Thanks
