Hey there,

as you see I am new in quantnet.

My uncertainty about which Financial Mathematics Programmes I'd have a chance to get in to is making me open this Thread.
I am very thankful for each advice and experience.

My Profile:
Holding a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a minor in Economics from a German University (University of Munich). Since the grading system is different there I have a very hard time comparing myself to mean GPAs communicated by the universities.
My final grade is a 2.22 in a grading system that goes from 1 (very good), over 2 (good), 3 (satisfieing),.. to 6.
I took one class in Financial Mathematics during my Bachelor studies, as well as I did one seminar (presentation) in that field. My bachelor thesis was also in that field. However my grade in probability theory was pretty bad (just passed with a 4).
About my experience:
I did one 5 month internship at a small Asset Manager and am starting another internship in November in Investment Consulting, where I will mostly work in MATLAB (thats at least what we were agreeing on during the interview)
Test Results:
TOEFL iBT: 109
GRE: taking the GREs in 3 weeks. I just did a practice test with following scores:
Q - 168 , V - 150
My goal is to keep the Q up and to improve the Verbal to 153-154.

Since I have a great personal motivation to get into a programme in the US or North America your advices are very much appreciated. To evaluate where it is realistic to get in to is important to me since application fees are high and also fees in North America (as you all know) are gigantic - compared to Europe where it is partially for free (Germany, Sweden). If you tell me honestly I dont have a great chance of getting into a good programme i rather save the investment and study in Europe.

Programmes I've been looking in to:
Boston University Mathematical Finance (seems good and realistic to me - what is your opinion)
University of Toronto MMF (unrealistic? Didnt know its that competitive)
Unversity of Chicago (also here I am ver insecure about my chances)
Illinois Institute of Technology (optimistic about that - any experiences? good programme? good reputation? worth it?)
So i thought Id avoid universities like NYU - UCLA - Rutgers, since I am not a strong enough applicant.
Are there any other tips for programmes from your side?

Ok so, that seems like a pretty long Text. I hope I didnt overwhelm you guys.
I read a lot in the forum and saw that there are students of all of the programmes mentioned. Thus I hope for some helpful responses and am very thankful for any advice.

Thanks a LOT

Timo

To me you seem to have a competitive profile. Don't stop applying to one or two dream schools out of you thinking you are not good enough. Your program selection looks very good, add UCLA and Rutgers for sure.
