I don't have much to add beyond the fact that I am in the same situation. I suspect and hope Cornell is only marginally worse because my partner is in Syracuse so it would be nice to only be an hour away.
I am just having a hard time seeing clearly why Columbia is superior other than the widely held opinion that they are a better brand name in the quant world. Hopefully someone on here has a better informed perspective to shed some light.

These two programs seem to have similar curriculums, and they are both offered in the OR department. Could someone, probably recent graduates, share more about their opinions or experiences with these two programs?

'Comparison: Cornell MFE and Columbia MSFE' was merged into this thread.
Hi, Could someone provide more insights of these two programs? I'm interested in becoming a quant researcher/analyst or quant trader after graduation, so I would like to know which of these programs can provide me with more opportunities in these fields?
As a previous post mentioned, many praise of Columbia's MSFE is about it's superior location in NYC. However, since Cornell also have CFEM(NYC campus), will its location be comparable to Columbia's?
I'm looking for quant researcher/analyst/trader roles at buy side HFs(like 2 sigma, Citadel, etc.) or large banks(Citi, Goldman, MS, JPM, etc.). Which of these programs could prepare me better and have a higher chance of placing students in these companies? (I deeply understand getting into these companies is very hard. So I'm asking about the relative strength of these two programs). Thanks for any input!

'CBS MSFE vs . Cornell MFE' was merged into this thread.
Hi everyone,

I'm currently struggling to choose between two programs: CBS MSFE (Columbia Business School Master of Science in Financial Economics) and Cornell MFE (Cornell Master of Financial Engineering). I would really appreciate any advice based on your experience or knowledge!

Background:
  • I’m from China.
  • I have several quant research internship experiences during undergrad.
  • After graduation, I hope to work in the U.S., preferably in a quant-related role (but I'm also open to other positions).
  • Quant roles are attractive to me mainly because of the high salary potential.

My thoughts so far:

CBS MSFE
Pros:

  • Strong program reputation and Columbia Business School branding.
  • Outstanding faculty and very strong peer group; I feel I could learn a lot from being in such an environment.
Cons:
  • Very expensive tuition and living costs in NYC.
  • I've heard that the curriculum is quite theoretical (many PhD-level courses) and may be less practical compared to other MFE programs.
  • Given the tough job market recently, I’m concerned whether the high cost is worth it if job placement isn't guaranteed. From what I’ve heard, even at CBS MSFE, it has been quite challenging over the past two years to secure internships, which makes me even more cautious about the return on investment.

Cornell MFE
Pros:

  • Strong career services reputation; I've heard they are very supportive with internship and job placements.
  • There’s a “built-in” summer internship after the first semester, which feels like a safety net.
  • I like the vibe of living in Ithaca for its beauty and lower living expenses, and spending the third semester in NYC for recruiting.
Cons:
  • The program’s overall ranking and brand may not be as strong as CBS MSFE.
  • I’m worried whether the Cornell title might be a disadvantage when applying for internships and full-time jobs compared to CBS.

Main concerns:
I am mainly struggling between paying a premium for CBS's brand and network vs. choosing Cornell for its stronger career services and lower cost.
Especially with the current hiring environment being difficult, I’m wondering: Will the CBS title significantly boost my chances, or will career services and practical support matter more?

I would really appreciate any advice, especially if you have experience with either program, or general thoughts on how title vs. career support plays out in real job hunting.

Thank you so much!
