Hi, I am a student from India pursuing masters in computational aerodynamics. I am in receipt of an admit from Univ of essex for PhD. How is the univ? any details or suggestions are solicited.

*Shrug* In general, a second-tier university. What have you been admitted to? Look at the department strength, not the university as a whole. Essex is not Cambridge or Imperial, but the department to which you've been admitted may be decent.

the centre to which I am selected is Centre for Computational Finance and Economic Agents

All bets are off in today's market.

I found this on the department's home page:

The Centre for Computational Finance and Economic Agents (CCFEA) is an innovative, interdisciplinary and laboratory based teaching and research Centre which is a showcase for cutting edge computational and evolutionary methods to simulate markets with artificially intelligent agents and to design real time trading and risk management systems.

The tacit premise for this kind of activity is unfettered financial markets. As many of my recent posts on this forum make clear, I think this era of unfettered markets is drawing to an abrupt close. But this is a personal opinion. There are others on this forum who have a more sanguine outlook. In the final analysis you have to make your own decision. Were I in your position, I'd opt for a Ph.D. in aerodynamics: the world is going to continue to need engineers, teachers, plumbers and so on. It's not equally clear to me that it will continue to need brigades of quants in a radically more regulated financial environment.
