Entry points into a quant career

I've been reading quant net for awhile now but this is my first post. I have read the million forums about the difference between a Phd and MFE as an entry point into a quant career, but I also recently read a forum about how the MFE programs are heavily used as a route for international students to get a visa to work in the US and thus are not necessarily a good option for domestic students.

My questions are:
Is an undergraduate degree really an entry point into a quant career assuming strong math and programming skills?
If so, what types of quant jobs are available to students with just an undergraduate degree? (Analyst, Developer, Trader, etc)
Does the undergraduate degree matter? (Math, Finance, Engineering, etc)

I realize a lot of the job postings listed online for quant positions list a masters degree or Phd as a requirement, but then there is a lot of talk about those being just a formality and not necessarily rigid.
