Library Creates Graduate Student Blog and Video Orientation
October 16th, 2006
The Newman Library announces the launch of two innovative media services in an effort to meet the challenging needs of Baruch's graduate students. "Graduate students tend to rank library services very highly, but aren't generally aware of all the resources available to them," says Linda Rath, Graduate Services Librarian. She is hoping to change that at Baruch with the new Graduate Research Blog and an online video orientation. "Graduate students approach research differently than undergraduates and Baruch students are commuters who work," says Rath. "We're hoping to create a participatory environment and that this technology can be used to supplement library services." The Graduate Research Blog, which is available now at http://graduateresearch.wordpress.com/, serves as a forum for library staff and students to exchange research advice, post comments and make suggestions. New services and seminars are also announced through the blog. While librarians are on hand in the Newman Library during regularly scheduled hours, the blog allows graduate students to discuss research and resources anytime, whether with staff or other students, on campus or off. The fourteen minute long video orientation provides an online tour of the Newman Library. Available through a link on the Graduate Services page on the library's website, the tour is segmented so students can not only use it at their convenience, but also skip around to their topics of interest. In-person group orientation tours, which generally last about 5 to 7 minutes, will still be available but often do not allow for a complete tour and review of resources due to time constraints and students can feel overloaded with information. The video orientation can be used as a refresher and will allow students to review the library's services online while they are physically off campus. The library encourages students to offer their suggestions about services they would like to see developed or enhanced. For more information, contact: Linda Rath, Graduate Services Librarian Linda_Rath@baruch.cuny.edu (646) 312-1622

The collection is accessible both on and off campus through the library's web site. Access is also available via the library's online catalog, CUNY+, where a bibliographic record has been added for each title.

Three Information Services Librarians Appointed
July 28th, 2006
Following a nationwide search, the Newman Librarian has appointed three faculty members to the Information Services Division, with responsibility for reference service, instruction, collection development, faculty outreach, and other services. David Brodherson (Assistant Professor) holds a B.A. (Biology) from NYU and a B.S. (Art History & Photography) from Utah State University. His graduate degrees include an M.A. (Art History) from the University of Chicago, Ph.D. (City & Regional Planning & History of Architecture) from Cornell University, and M.L.S. from Queens College. Dr. Brodherson comes to Baruch with three years of experience as an academic librarian following teaching appointments in higher education, including an adjunct appointment as Associate Professor of Art History at Hunter College. He was awarded research fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Graham Foundation, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He has also served as a curatorial advisor to the Art Institute of Chicago. Dr. Brodherson has authored four chapters in edited volumes and two scholarly articles. Harold Gee (Assistant Professor) holds three degrees: BA (Management & Finance) NYU; MBA, St. John's University; MLS, Queens College. After teaching and serving as Assistant Dean at St. John's, Professor Gee held research positions at Paine Webber, Lehman Brothers, and Lazard Freres. He also worked as an information professional consultant for LexisNexis. In 2000 he joined the Newman Library as an adjunct faculty member, then worked with us full-time, teaching on the trading floor of the college's Subotnick Financial Services Center and providing reference service in the library. In 2003 he held the position of Research Librarian for Business at the University of California, Irvine. The library is happy to welcome back to the department such a distinguished business librarian. Joseph Hartnett (Instructor) received a B.A. (Journalism) from Buffalo State College and an M.S. in Library Science from the University at Buffalo, SUNY. While in graduate school, he worked in three academic libraries providing chat reference service, cataloging, training users, and assisting with the creation of digital libraries. During the past academic year he was a key member of the team responsible for the creation of the college's Digital Media Library (DML). In November 2005 he and Professor Sheau-yueh Chao presented a poster session on the DML at the NYLINK annual meeting. Mr. Hartnett will serve as the library's primary contact with the CUNY Online BA program.

Newman Library Chosen to Support CUNY Online BA Program
July 26th, 2006
The City University of New York is offering its first Online Baccalaureate in Fall 2006. Designed for those who seek to complete their college degree, CUNY's new online baccalaureate combines a strong liberal arts curriculum with a concentration in communication and culture. Courses will be diverse and challenging — and include such areas as mass media studies, organizational change, global culture, historical perspectives, scientific reasoning, and urban affairs. Offering a distinctive "virtual classroom" experience, the online baccalaureate combines flexible scheduling and Web-based tools to facilitate a high degree of interaction among students, their instructors, and fellow classmates. The Newman Library has been designated to provide library services for this important new program. In addition to offering traditional library services, the library will provide a wide range of digital services including chat and e-mail reference, electronic course reserves, and access to thousands of full-text publications through 200 online databases. Joseph Hartnett, Information Services Librarian, is the library's liaison to the CUNY Online BA program. According to Mr. Hartnett, "Students entering this program may be a bit nervous, because distance learning is a new experience for them. We are making sure that everything is easily available so that their time is spent productively."

1- Thursday, November 30th -Baruch College Fund Reception - THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT EVENT!

- Faculty lounge (Room 760 in the Newman Conference Center (Library Building, 152 E. 25th Street) immediately following the meeting of the Trustees of the Baruch College Fund at 5 PM. The Trustees of the BCF are alumni of the College. The purpose of the event is to give the Trustees a chance to socialize and to introduce the new members of the Board.
- Volunteers should arrive no later than 4:30 pm. Dress is business attire.

Major role: Talk and mingle with the guests (Trustees of the BCF). They should be outgoing and feel comfortable introducing themselves to the Trustees all of whom are quite "approachable" and anxious to become acquainted with our current students. I would suggest that they ask questions to those they are speaking to such as when they graduated, what they studied, which clubs and activities they participated in, their current careers etc. This will undoubtedly lead the Trustee(s) to ask the students about themselves.

President Waldron is hosting the event, so of cause she will be there along with the deans, vice presidents and staff of College Advancement.

2- Monday, December 4th - The Russell Banks CEO Leadership Lecture Series at Baruch College.
7:00- 8:00PM - Library Building - 7th floor
Guest Speakers: Nina and Tim Zagat - Co-Founders and Co-Chairs of
ZAGAT Survey and Guides
- Volunteers should arrive at 6:30PM
Club Officers role will be to:
- direct traffic separating VIP's to reception in lounge and students to 750
- attend reception
- pass around microphone during Q&A
- meet Zagats in lobby and escort them to 750

RSVP by Friday, November 24th, or sooner to Barbara_Weiner@baruch.cuny.edu
