Is it common or possible to go from quantitative researcher to working in a private equity firm?

Not common, but possible, and depends on what kind of role in PE you would be interested in. I’m interested in private credit myself — but want to do quant research at such a firm — and have identified some firms in this space that have quant researchers e.g. Ares, Cerberus, GoldenTree. PE will be a similar story, I just have not looked into it as much. Some relevant articles I’ve been able to find:

Really depends on what you’d want to be doing in PE. If you’re looking to do something more traditional, then I would say why do quant research to begin with.
