I’m an international student about to start a role in quant trading, and I’m trying to get a clearer understanding of how U.S. firms handle green card sponsorship for quant trader positions—specifically when the process typically begins. If anyone has recent experience or insight into sponsorship timelines at firms such as (but not limited to) Jane Street, Citadel Securities, Five Rings, or SIG, I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts.
From what I’ve gathered, most firms seem to start the process after the first year of employment. That said, I’m wondering whether there are any exceptions—have there been cases where sponsorship began from the outset? And if the one-year delay is typical, is there any way to make a case for earlier processing, especially in situations where legal or personal timing constraints are in play?
In my case, I’m navigating both U.S. immigration timelines and obligations in my home country, so early sponsorship would make a meaningful difference. I should also clarify that while firms are generally willing to sponsor H-1B visas, that alone doesn’t address my situation, and what matters in my case is the timing of the green card process.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
