How relevant is work experience

Say I’ve been working full-time in quantitative areas for a few years before applying to an MFE, for family, marriage, or health reasons. How much do admissions offices value this? Is it enough to offset, say, a mediocre undergraduate record (e.g., average math performance and low interaction with finance classes)?

I’m asking because I’m planning to apply in 2026 with Baruch Pre-MFE and QuantNet C++ and Options courses completed, but I’m wondering if I should pursue some formal math studies as well, so I offset the poor undergraduate grades (with poor I mean passing but nowhere near top percentile). To be clear, I've worked at two hedge funds making forecasts since my intern days, and now work at an equities fund, too.

ETA: My background: Bachelor's in Economics from a target school in my country; worked mainly in the economic research department of hedge funds, with heavy focus on Python programming.

Almost all programs greatly value work ex. Some more than the others. Again, if you had an absolutely horrendous academic record, then it can be a tough sell. But average/above average undergrad performance can be greatly offset by good quality, relevant work ex, backed by strong LoRs.
