is CFA helpful in becoming a quant?

I am currently in my final year of college, pursuing engineering. My future aspiratiuons are to become a quantitative researcher/analyst/developer. I am also planning on doing MFE (more on the mathematical side). I'm contemplating pursuing the CFA. Can the CFA certification significantly contribute to my goal of becoming a quant, or is it considered more of an optional enhancement with limited impact?

some schools like applicants who have passed the CFA L1...it can also be useful for portfolio management roles.
