Is research exp. helpful for applying MFE in US?

I'm currently a 4th year undergraduate (not studying in US).

I'm in touch with a prof. in Mathematical Finance in maths faculty, and trying to get an opportunity of research in this field.

Just wonder if it is helpful to have some related research exp. when applying for MFE.
(I still have more than half a year for me to apply for grad. school)

Of course, you will then be able to better explain what you understand about the field, what your career goal is and how you can fit in.

It's way better than "I read "My Life as a Quant" and was fascinated so I want to study MFE" stories that I come across way too often to believe.
