Math PhD, Intern or MFE ???

Hi all,

I am currently a numerical math phd in a 2nd tier US research school. I was planning to graduate and get my phd degree in August and get into one of the top MFE program this year. However, I become confused after I was informed that I got an intern opportunity in a big name company (like Goldman Sachs).

The internship is in a financial engineering department and it's about 2 and a half months. If I went for this intern, I would not be able to graduate due to the CPT restriction for a phd student. Also, I don't want to use the OPT at this point since I am hoping to use the OPT after graduating from MFE.

Is there any way to get around this? If not, should I graduate and get into the MFE, or should I go for the internship and postpone graduation (also likely the MFE)?

Thank you for any advices!

Best,

XXX

If you can already have your foot in the door at a BB firm, why do an MFE at all? What are your career goals?

math phd program 'dominates' financial engineering. in case you are from
those target schools, why waste one year in mfe? you can start mfe during
your career life later though. with blue chip experience, more choices...
