This is an interesting development. I'm curious to see which programs they offer under this new school.
The new school will build upon NYU’s preeminence in mathematics, applied mathematics, data science, computer science, and engineering to further strengthen the university’s leadership at the frontiers of these disciplines; to prepare students more broadly for careers in computational fields; to contribute to the growth of the tech sector in New York and across the United States; and to accelerate NYU’s continued rise as a national leader in engineering and scientific research and innovation.

The creation of the Courant Institute School of Math, Computing, and Data Science (CISM) sounds like a huge deal. They're basically taking the three pillars of modern quant finance (Math, Coding, and Data Science/ML) and jamming them all into one super-school.

Centralizing the resources sounds good, but it has to ramp up the competition, right? Imagine all the top students from the FE, MMF, and Data Science MS programs fighting for the limited spots in the best new AI/ML or Advanced Stochastic classes. Plus, this move probably jacks up the admissions standards for both programs.

The question is how this will affect the existing quant programs at NYU. They have NYU Tandon MFE and NYU Courant Math Finance.
The new program sounds prestige enough and with good marketing, they can take a sizable bit from the market.
It does seem to train for tech, not finance specifically.
We will see.
