I was at an event yesterday at Baruch and noticed many students running to and fro in the rain (carrying umbrellas) with their knapsacks on their backs. I had a knapsack on, but I was wearing it backwards (in front of me).

Think about it: When holding an umbrella we hold the handle in front of us. Umbrellas are circular, so the handle to the edge is the radius. You now need to add the width of a person, say .5*r? So there is only 25% of the umbrella left to protect your laptop and college notes from the pouring rain. That is usually not enough.

However, if you wear your knapsack on your stomach you can be sure at least 50% of the umbrella will be protecting your knapsack.

Just a tip for you guys in this nasty weather. I am genuinely curious why no one else seems to have adopted this method during downpours.

Cheers,

depends on the size of the umbrella... or the type of backpack. Mine is water proof to avoid this sort of issue...
