PhD in Finance or Economics?

Hi,

hope to get some valuable advise for my consideration.

I'm currently graduating with MPhil in Economics from a European top university, with a GPA 4.0. I'm considering in apllying to a PhD program in the US. PhD is in my consideration because I would like to do some academic work at some point of my life.

Now my question is, which would possibly serve me better if I would be interested in hedge fund and private equity industry, PhD in economics or finance? Also, which would have a stornger position in quantitavite jobs?

I really hope to get some opinions from people with more expirience.
