I will be attending Rutgers MQF 2012. I have quite alot of IT experince and I was planning on completing PMP earlier but left the preparation half way. I have few days before the program starts and I am thinking of completing PMP but I am confused on how PMP will add value to my future career.
e.g for position such as Risk Manager , I guess PMP will help etc...

Can some experts suggest how PMP could help me ( worst case it will not add any value ) ?

Thanks,

please someone with knowlwdge reply... I have 10+ yrs of IT experience.
I want to know how PMP could be useful to get job/intership after completing MS in Quantitative Finance. ( e.g any particular type of job role etc )

From what little I know, I would guess that the PMP is not a common credential in quant finance (or risk). It is generally held by people in IT management. Many people in project management but outside of IT won't have heard of it either.

I don't know how intensive the PMP is to attain. If it is not hard to complete based on what you've done already, you may as well finish. It should not harm you (you can leave it off the resume in applications it would not be relevant to) and since you have so much IT experience already, a senior IT management position may be an opportunity that you have and many of your peers don't (and such positions can be high paying, although maybe not that quantitative).

I also worked in IT management for some time prior to grad school. It's not a bad life and there's always need for it. However, if you go along from RU MQF into risk, trading, sales, analysis, pricing or even programming quantitative projects by yourself or in small teams, I doubt the PMP will be very relevant. I could be wrong though.
