Hey guys,
Been a long time lurker here(about a year now) and its finally that time to get an honest opinion on my profile:
  • Top 5 UK Uni: First class(predicted and current average too), Rank 1 in stat mech, quantum mechanics, thermal physics, numerical modelling, rest first class.
  • Awards: Dean's commendations, computational prize, research fellowship award(top 50 out of all uni students)
  • A levels: 4A*A
  • Before A levels, I was in India, gave the GCSE equiv. there : 99.2%(national merit list), NTSE ( all india rank - 20).
  • International Award: Represented the UK globallly ( one of IPT, IPhO, IYPT), rank under 20.
UK olympiads: Bpho(top gold), bmo(merit), oxford experimental challenge, UKMT(2x gold)
    Indian Olympiads: RMO, NSEJS.
  • Quant competitions: QRT survival modelling (top 50 rn), DRW crypto(top 5%), IMC prosperity(not that decent, will probs not include)
  • Internships: Sell side - Quant risk and capital modelling(illiquid portfolio, london based firm), buy side: quant/arbit strat desk(indian firm), student hedgefund(london, quant researcher), Research project: (strategy and dataset analysis, tie up with oxford said business school)
  • Research/Projects: active github, 3 projects, pretty confident in these. (py, c++)
  • coding competitions: coach contestant and team lead (UKIEPC - ICPC first round, in 3 days), codeforces rating - cand. master, google code to learn: finalist in 2019.
  • GRE: 170Q / 152V (Gave it yesterday, did not prepare for verbal at all but would this be a problem at all in any case?)
  • Extracurriculars and all that fluff too
I’m targeting CMU MSCF, Baruch, MIT MFin, Princeton MFin, Columbia MFE, Oxford MFE.

Would really appreciate brutal opinions on how this profile stacks up for the top program.

Thanks in advance!

definitely go from the sell side experience I have in the London firm to buy side/hft. Imperial maths fin would also be target, but I’m not too sure how wel RMFE fars for actual buy side placement. Do chic, gatech far well in their respective markets as well for my desired role?

Buy-side roles are some of the most sought after and hence harder to break in. I don't have a breakdown of these data from all the programs but the top ones (Baruch, Princeton) do place there.
Chicago, GaTech and to some extension NCSU place well in their local market, the benefit of not being in NYC. If you are the top 5 students in each program, and interview well, I think you have a good shot. If not, look at the strength of each program and see where most graduates end up.
