Reference letters: university of toronto

I was originally thinking of getting my reference letters from 2 professors and 1 close friend of mine who works in Finance. This friend is the CEO of a large financial firm. He has sponsored me to work overseas in Beijing, China. However, he does not know me in a purely academic setting. I know he will write a good letter.

Should I ask him? Or just get 3 professors instead.

Depends on where you want to apply, I would sayy. If you're applying for an MFE (i.e. you want to work directly after you graduate) then the reference letter from your friend should be good.

I am applying to Toronto. The only problem is that he doesn't know me an academic setting.
