School decision, Peking U?

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to hear your input regarding some schools. I have been accepted to a few universities and wanted to see which one you guys would recommend and why.

Peking University HSBC School - Quant. Finance
Imperial College London - Fin. Math
Johns Hopkins - Applied Math (AOC in fin. math)
NUS - Fin. Math
HKUST - Fin. Math
KAUST - Aplied Math
LSE - Applied Math

I was looking into Peking U. and wanted to see if anyone here knows the regulations in China in terms of working permits for foreigners. Also what are the chances to find a quant job in the States with a PKU degree? Maybe someone is/was in a similar situation. Same questions for Singapore.

Thanks.

Hi, I am an undergraduate in PKU.

PKU HSBC School in in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. I don't think Shenzhen is a financial center in China and the quantitative finance in China mainland is not mature. However, Hongkong, which is near Shenzhen may provide a lot of quant jobs, and many students from China mainland may compete with you.

For the program, it provides more time on courses instead of internship. But there are still many opportunities to find an part-time internship.

I noticed that when looking at their curriculum, their program wasn't as math intensive. But I also read quite a bit about PKU and they have a very good reputation overall. Many students end up in some top-tier US universities for their graduate degrees. If you don't mind me asking, how do you rate PKU and how do you like the university in general, in terms of faculty, people, lifestyle?

Thank you.

In China, including HK, Taiwan, PKU is one of the best universities. You may find it ranks second among Chinese Universities as USNEWS and QS reported, and the first is HKU. Many undergraduates whose major is finance find jobs in JPM, MorganS, GS, UBS, etc, because PKU is one of four target schools in China mainland. In PKU HSBC, some professors are from USA or other countries, and with their Chinese colleagues they provides some great courses.
PKUers are friendly and they are not so aggressive like some other top universities' students.

However, Ottocycle, if you wanna get a job in HK or Singarpore, I think HKUST is a better choice than PKU HSBC. Their network may be stronger than PKU HSBC. And I think PKUers in Beijing who major in Finance or Economics may be more competitive than PKU HSBC, because Beijing and Shanghai are the financial center of China.

Ok, thank you for letting me know. I made my decision. By the way, are you familiar with the Shenzhen area? When I was in HK I was told this is where all the production facilities are, do you know anything about this area? Good thing is, it's close to HK, which is great, because I love Hong Kong!

It's my pleasure to introduce shenzhen, hahhah. Yes, as you know, Shenzhen is a center for digital production. Foxconn has a huge factory there. However, the labor cost grows, so Shenzhen government has decided to become one of the financial centers in china. The government has provided an area, which is called Qianhai, to achieve its goal, and this decis

And this decision has been supported by Chinese central government.

The people in Shenzhen is very nice, because they most are immigrants from other parts of china.

It is easy for shenzheners to HK. Just a passport and some bridges you need.

Yeah but PKU is still maintaining its old name presumably to preserve its brand. FYI, Peking is just Cantonese way of reading Beijing so it's nothing like they changed the name.
Thanks. I did not know that.
