To become a prop trader

Hi there!

I aim to be a prop trader for myself, a skillful one. What are the essentials to be successful to become one?

Right now, I'm in between jobs, working back office all along. I'm thinking of learning programming (like VBA) but I don't know how does it relate to trading though I'm seeing headhunters emphasizing VBA. Also, how relevant is data management (heavy pro-Excel users) be the foundation to trading?

Should I focus more on trading strategies and quantitative math? Is having quant-level math the only way to be a skillful trader? Which direction should I go?

Thanks!
