Using QA outside of the workplace.

Forgive me if there is a simple answer to this, but after learning various QA techniques, of which Algorithmic Trading comes to mind first, why not utilize this in an "at home" style? Nearly everyone will go right on the job hunt and continue in their career for x-bank for many years, but at what point can one start something similar to a private fund, and work with their own earnings?
