Here are the possible choices:
1) Machine learning and statistical pattern recognition
2) Computer Vision for human computer interaction
3) foundations of speech and lanauge processing
4) intro to neural networks
5) intro to data mining

Which two courses would be the most beneficial for my mfe applications and for my skillset in general?

I have taken few courses in ml and have good research experience in ml as well . So i would recommend you to take 1) > 5) > 4) . ML is more like a really useful tool and when it comes to applications, having a general idea in all possible will be really useful , but if you want to go for research in specific fields then it is your wish.

Couldn't agree more, Professor! 😄

Many of our professors in statistics have been using methods like ridge regression and random forests for prediction since forever! Back then, we called it “statistical learning,” and our textbooks and papers mostly went unnoticed—unless, of course, you were already deep into stats. 📉📚

Then, just a few years ago, “machine learning” became a buzzword. Suddenly, our old “statistical learning” courses were getting rebranded as “machine learning” just to catch people’s attention and draw in students. Fast forward to 2023, and now everything we once called “statistical learning” is getting dressed up as “artificial intelligence” to keep up with the times! 🤖✨

I am also a candidate for 2026 fall, focusing on MFE.
In my opinion, for MFE applications, 1) Machine Learning and Statistical Pattern Recognition and 5) Intro to Data Mining would be the most beneficial. These courses will strengthen your quantitative skills in predictive modeling and data analysis—key areas in finance and quantitative roles. 🤓 🤓 :coffee:
