    Need help

define "best" that's purely subjective If you mean by performance, that information will be hard to come by, as many will be hedge funds that don't dole that information out. What do you want from a quant shop, what do you think makes it the "best", and I may be able to help you narrow the...

PhD required for Stat Arb / Energy Trading?

it's not an apples or oranges thing Some places will only look for quants if they have a PhD, like SIG - no PhD means no quant job. Other places are more open minded. It's not that black and white

Chartered Accountant/MBA wanting to shift to a career in Financial Engineering

MFE transition If you do make the career switch, understand that you face natural challenges. If your previous career is not germane, it can be viewed as baggage more than an asset. Firms may gravitate toward some one fresh out of school rather than some one who is making a career switch...

Should the quant profession have an exam track

Tests don't equal success Passing a test doesn't mean you can "hack it". It means you did well on a test.
  17. EricFleming

Should the quant profession have an exam track

More Exams? Would it be nice to know through a magic # or score how strong a quant is? Yes. But I am skeptical. The quality of a school, GPA, degree are good indicators. And another tool: judgment after meeting the person in question. That's my two cents.

CMU MSCF Interview with Graduate of Carnegie Mellon University masters computational finance

the answer in blue was dead on. Internships - get them! You can get some experience that employers want, see how your education is applied, as well as network. You'll see after a few years in the field, that people move around and making good contacts pays off over time.

    which background is better?

Either is fine, with several caveats. I would put more emphasis on Physics over Math. With either, the more that is involved with application over theory the better. Wall Street wants people who can code as well as who can think and think efficiently. And INTERNSHIPS are an excellent idea...

Would you leave a bluge bracket IB for a startup?

this is not such a simple question. A start up means nothing is in place and proven through trial and error. It may not have the proper financing, in short, it's an unknown. If you do get "an offer you can't refuse" what you are getting is a premium for the career risk you are taking if it blows up.

    Employment prospects after 5 yrs

$100K is a decent ballpark for a base as a starting quant. the bonus is discretionary and would depend on a number of factors. BTW, I got my UB degree in 1995.

    Employment prospects after 5 yrs

MFE=Quant, not MBA MBAs are for bankers, not quants. An MFE is a "workingman's PhD" and can open similar doors to those that would be opened by a doctorate.

Bay Area EEs I have to agree with Dominic. Most firms (banks, HFs) are located in the places you'd expect: NYC, London, HK, etc. the Bay Area is a much smaller market, though there is likely a few quant hedge funds out there. My contacts in CA are spartan, but I know that Calpers is looking...

MBAs are not as marketable for Quant roles the harder the science or the math the better. When you drift into MBAs, it's just not what quants on Wall Street are looking for. So, if you want to be a quant, then veering into those maths classes are necessary. That's not to say that a BA from...
