Hi all,

I'm looking for thread about Enrollment Deferral of various MFE, Financial Mathematics programs in this forum, but have not found an informative thread yet except the link of MIT deferral. Let's start a thread here.

Assume that you have been admitted to your desirable program. However, due to serious and unforeseen personal reason, you might not be able to enroll this year. Question: What is the perspective of various programs regarding the student's request of Enrollment Deferral?

I know some of the programs state explicitly in their FAQ that they do not allow enrollment deferral such as: Berkeley MFE, Columbia MFE, UCLA. Columbia MFE mentioned about reactivation form on their FAQ but the link to reactivation form was not found.

I heard from the Information Session of Chicago MSFM-Singapore campus that they allow deferral on a case by case basic and the decision comes from the program director.

May I ask:
  1. What does Baruch program think of Enrollment Deferral?
  2. Assume I am admitted this year and Baruch does not allow deferral, how big is the risk of a rejection when I reapply next year given that I spend 1 more year to improve my qualification such as: improve my C++ programming, improve my General GRE verbal score(not sure if it's necessary), improve my working experience by seeking a role nearer to Quantitative Finance (subject to the job market. It's not good currently) or alternatively, try to get more market knowledge by following a certain market, trading using my own money etc.. , demonstrate that my Math background is still solid after a year elapsed (by taking GRE math and score above 90% for example). FYI, I graduated with bachelor in Quantitative Finance in July 2010.
  3. Do you know any story of successful deferral from various MFE, Financial Mathematics programs?

I know that application to MFE, MSFM are getting more and more competitive over the years. Hence, I am quite worried about my situation. Thank you for your reply an attention on this topic.

Disclaim: By posting this, it does not mean I have been admitted to Baruch program this year :)

The Baruch MFE Program has the deferral policy of any other program within City University of New York: admission can be deferred for one year.

Dear Professor Dan,

Thank you very much for your reply. It's enlightening to know that. I have found the academic policy of City University link here.

It states that " Applicants who are admitted are unable to start their studies may defer their enrollment for 2 semesters. Thereafter, the applicant must reapply for admission".

May I know if there are any additional terms and conditions applied for the Enrollment Deferral of Baruch MFE, apart from the condition of deferring no more than 2 semesters?
