I'm a software engineer with an interest in finance. I'm hoping to get some suggestions on how to connect with people who have similar interests. The eventual goal being, to create a startup of some type. I'd even be interested in joining projects already under way.

Any recommendations?

Well, hanging around Quant forums helps :)

You might also do some reading to become familiar with basic terminology, common pricing models and so forth. Perhaps contribute to an existing open-source quant project (e.g., quantlib) or start your own; even if it's something as simple as cleaning up code, writing tests/examples/documentation, etc., you'll learn lots.
