Is this a good decision? Extension of my University Education

Hi everyone,

I have a dream to be admitted into a top MFE program. And I believe I can.

I am a final year student at a top 100 university and am confident that I will be admitted to some of the MFE programs in US if I apply this year.

But I plan to apply next year instead.

I mean, I want to postpone my graduation and take 5 additional mathematics courses next semester. I will try my best to score A of these courses and re-apply next year. However, everything comes with a tradeoff. By doing so, I am risking my next half or the whole coming year.

Anyone has any opinion to offer? Is this a good idea to take an additional half year to study? (at a cost of delaying my undergraduate graduation)

if you are pretty sure you will be admitted to top notch programs, why bothering spending another years' time and $$$$ ?

Hi roni:

My GPA is 4.56/5 (Singapore Standard); GRE: 700+800+3.5.

I've taken 4 engineering math courses and stochastic process. I plan to taken Probability and stats 2, Linear algebra, PDE, numerical methods and introduction to mathematical finance next semester.

Yeah, thanks. Just because my friends are all going to work or grad school this year, it looks weird for others to spend one extrea year.

Just a thought: Why not apply to a top MFE program and if you get in, good. If not you delay your graduation half a year and take courses that prepare you better?

It seems to me that if a University will accept you into its program, and specifically a top University, it considers you to have the necessary background. Don't see the reason for delaying your graduation if you can start your graduate study right away.

The question is, do you know probability, mathematical statistics and linear algebra? These three are very important in any MFE program.
Some programs can give you a conditional acceptance, some will accept you and it will be your job to study these topics.
You did stochastic processes, wasn't it probability based?

Try to apply and see if you get accepted. However, even if you get accepted and you don't have the adequate background, you'll suffer a lot.
