I’m thinking about pursuing a part-time Masters, and have narrowed in on the Masters in Mathematics and Statistics offered at Georgetown and the Dual Masters in Mathematics and Statistical Science programs at George Mason (I live in the DC area). I’m having trouble deciding which one I should pursue my masters at, mainly because I don’t know how well-regarded their math/stat programs are.
The degrees requirements are also considerably different. Georgetown’s is 10 courses long, and to honest, would probably be a breeze: no thesis, courses are at or under par with the courses I took as an undergrad (I was enrolled in several PhD stat classes and was in a generally advanced program).
The GMU program seems significantly more demanding. Successful completion would require two research theses and around 18 courses (its essentially two separate Masters programs). I’m not sure if I would be able to devote the time needed as I also have a full-time job.
So the conundrum I face is whether to take the easy road and get awesome grades or take the more rigorous (and potentially longer) program. Ordinarily I would be all for the GMU option, but I don’t really know where their mathematics department stands in terms of academic reputation. At some point down the road, I also plan on applying for CMU's MSCF program.
